Mbappé Leads France to World Cup Quarterfinals

Poland falls in thrilling match

France advances to next round

In a thrilling display of attacking prowess, reigning world champions France defeated Poland 3-1 on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The match was billed as a clash of two of the world's top strikers, Kylian Mbappé of France and Robert Lewandowski of Poland. In the end, it was Mbappé who stole the show, scoring two goals and setting up another to lead France to victory.

Mbappé opened the scoring in the 29th minute, calmly slotting home a penalty after he was brought down in the box by Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny. The goal was Mbappé's fifth of the tournament, moving him into a tie for the lead with Ecuador's Enner Valencia.

Poland equalized in the 44th minute through a stunning volley from Lewandowski. The goal was Lewandowski's first of the tournament and his 77th for Poland, moving him into a tie for fifth place on the all-time international scoring list.

France regained the lead in the 74th minute when Mbappé set up Olivier Giroud for a tap-in. The goal was Giroud's fourth of the tournament, moving him into a tie for the lead with Mbappé.

Mbappé then sealed the victory for France in the 90th minute, dribbling past two Poland defenders and firing a low shot into the bottom corner. The goal was Mbappé's sixth of the tournament, making him the first player to score six goals in a World Cup since Diego Maradona in 1986.

France will face England in the quarterfinals on Saturday, December 10. Poland's World Cup campaign ends with a disappointing defeat, but Lewandowski leaves the tournament with his head held high, having scored his first World Cup goal and led his team to the knockout stage.
